SYDNEY A holiday swim in Western Australia resulted in a severe octopus “whipping,” and a video of the encounter quickly went viral.
When geologist and author Lance Karlson and his family were vacationing in Geographe Bay on Australia’s southwestern coast, he was getting ready to go for a swim when he saw what he thought was the tail of a stingray coming from the water and striking a bird.

Angry Octopus Lashes Out At Man On Australia Beach
Nearer with his 2-year-old daughter in tow, Karlson saw it was an octopus and filmed it striking out at him with its tentacles from the shallow water.
His footage shows the creature swimming alongside him in waist-deep water before it abruptly attacks. After shading his family under a tent, he donned a pair of goggles and waded into the sea to look for crab shells on his own.
The octopus located Karlson once more while he was underwater, and it lashed out at him, causing a painful sting across his neck and back.
Karlson’s upper body and neck were marked with crimson where the octopus had been. She explained that the octopus sometimes “slaps” at the fish who come to scavenge the shells.

According to Mather, octopi are normally timid creatures, thus this behaviour is out of the ordinary for them.
Despite the fact that violent behaviour from an octopus is quite rare, “they have clear personalities, and you might describe this one as irritable or reactive,” as Mather put it. The octopus wasn’t trying to hurt the man; it was merely warning him.
