Kemp Lashes M.L.B. as Republicans Defend Georgias Voting Law

As a result of the new voting law in Georgia, Governor Brian Kemp has criticised Major League Baseball for moving this year’s All-Star Game and draught out of the state.

Rob Manfred, commissioner of Major League Baseball, has previously suggested that moving the games would be the greatest way to “show our beliefs” and stand against voting restrictions. But in a press conference on Saturday, Kemp blamed “fear and lies from liberal activists” for MLB’s decision.

Kemp Lashes M.L.B. as Republicans Defend Georgias Voting Law

With no help from the Democrats, the “Election Integrity Act” became law at the end of March, imposing new restrictions on the availability of ballot drop boxes and requiring voters to provide identification when casting a ballot by mail.

Republicans contend that the measure does not attempt to make voting more difficult in Georgia, despite criticism from President Biden and other prominent Democrats like former state representative Stacy Abrams.

As Kemp put it, “here’s the truth.” Regulatory framework “allows more people to vote, ensures the safety of ballot boxes around the clock in every county, grants voters the right to vote on weekends, and preserves the practise of absentee voting without explanation. It standardises voter identification standards and simplifies voting processes.”

On Friday, as the Atlanta Braves prepare to host Game 3 of the World Series against the Houston Astros, a conservative group in Georgia is releasing a new ad.

After MLB decided to transfer the 2021 All-Star Game out of Georgia earlier this year due to the state legislature’s passage of a contentious voting legislation, the ad welcomes the return of baseball to the Peach State.

This year’s World Series will feature the same “woke executives” who presented the trophy in previous years, the advertisement boasts. “The current lack of a baseball boycott is puzzling. The MLB is aware of the reality.”

Mr. Kemp’s informational convention followed a week of television interviews in which he defended the law, saying that the addition of a mandatory Saturday of early voting would increase voter turnout. He and other Republicans have called on state and federal Democratic leaders to stop using criticism of the law as a political football. (After reviewing the voting law, the New York Times identified 16 important provisions that could limit access to the ballot box or the neutral administration of elections.)

The decision to relocate the All-Star Game came amid an increasing drumbeat of corporation statements decrying the rules after they had already been signed, and was the first major statement by a major group or enterprise since Georgia passed its voting regulation.
