This month sees the release of remakes of I Know What You Did Last Summer and Slumber Party Massacre, as well as David Gordon Green’s sequel, Halloween Kills, which was a nasty summer surprise when Netflix purchased it from Fox/Disney. In the updated version of Scream coming to theatres in January, Ghostface will once again be making his way to the theatres on the prowl.
Consider There’s Someone Inside Your House, a barely audible squeak, in the midst of that roar, just like one of the numerous 80s sleepover cash-ins that were churned out just in case Freddy or Jason was leased out at the local video store. The film’s creators appear to believe that their four-alcohol-inducing Netflix mindless entertainment is The Slasher Film We Need Right Now, which makes it difficult to enjoy on even that low a level.
Unfortunately, Theres Someone Inside Your House is just another bland teen horror movie with a weak premise and an uninteresting plot turn. Not many people are even inside their own homes!
A hazing ritual gone wrong begins when a jerk of a jock takes a nap before the big game and wakes up to find his phone has been stolen and photographs of him beating someone up are hung all over the place. A person in his likeness (complete with a 3D-printed mask) shows up, kills him, and then broadcasts the murder and body count to the rest of their Nebraskan community.
But before the funeral can begin, the killer/investigator pipes in audio of an episode of her racist anonymous podcast, and another high school senior is chopped up (and left hanging in front of the church altar).
Our heroes, a group of social outcasts representing a variety of racial, sexual, and gender minorities, react with ambivalence to news Theres Someone Inside Your House Review Problematic Secrets. They’re hardly enthusiastic killers, but they also aren’t exactly heartbroken over the deaths.
However, there is one person who is concerned. Our protagonist, Makani (Sydney Park), is a Hawaiian transfer student who, as we soon discover, is hiding something from even her closest friends. The only way to know whether the murderer doesn’t find out about her is if he or she is caught.
Last Words
Perhaps because of its adaption status, “There’s Someone Inside Your House” never establishes its main characters as likeable enough to root for. They make a big game about keeping their inner selves hidden from each other, yet they rarely come across as human enough to be superficial in a believable way.
