In the history of the Academy Awards, Liza Minnelli is the only recipient whose parents both won the award. The Academy Juvenile Award, given to young actors and actresses, was instituted in honour of Judy Garland for her roles in The Wizard of Oz and Babes in Arms. Additionally, Vincent Minnelli, Liza’s dad, took home an Oscar for directing Gigi. In 1973, Liza Minnelli took home the trophy for her performance in Cabaret.

Best Supporting Actress
Already a Primetime Emmy winner, Martha Plimpton is in consideration for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as a bereaved mother in “Mass.” If she were to go all the way and win, she’d join an elite group of families in which both parents and offspring have won the Academy Award. Her dad, Keith Carradine, won an Oscar for best original song with “I’m Easy” from the film Nashville (1975).
There are currently 17 families that have produced Oscar winners at the parent-child or grandparent-grandchild levels. There have only been two sets of parent-child acting winners: Henry Fonda and Jane Fonda and Jon Voight and Angelina Jolie. Both families, the Hustons and the Coppolas, can boast THREE generations of Oscar winners.

Awards that are not based on actual competition, such as honorary ones or those given to children, will not be discussed in this article. So, whereas Michael Douglas has won two competing Oscars (Best Actor for “Wall Street” in 1988 and Best Picture for “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” in 1976), his father Kirk Douglas has only won one competitive Oscar (an Honorary Oscar) for his three nominations.

They are the first family in history to win the Academy Award for Best Picture in each of the three preceding generations. That family’s name is Huston. Anjelica Huston, Walter’s granddaughter, won Best Supporting Actress in 1985. Walter’s son John Huston won Best Director and Best Screenplay in 1948. They are the Coppolas.
Even in 2022, Katharine Hepburn was still ahead of the pack when it came to the number of Oscars she had won. However, six other actors tied for second place with three acting awards each, behind the “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” star who won four.

Hepburn appeared in dozens of films, but Daniel Day-Lewis is more selective. He has only been nominated for the Oscar for Best Actor six times, but he has already won three times.
Forty-three films have received nominations in all five of these categories as of the 94th Academy Awards (2021). It Happened One Night (1934), One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), and The Silence of the Lambs (1991) are the only films to have received all five of these major honours (1991).
