Nearer with his 2-year-old daughter in tow, Karlson saw it was an octopus and filmed it striking out at him with its tentacles from the shallow water.

His footage shows the creature swimming alongside him in waist-deep water before it abruptly attacks. After shading his family under a tent, he donned a pair of goggles and waded into the sea to look for crab shells on his own. The octopus located Karlson once more while he was underwater, and it lashed out at him, causing a painful sting across his neck and back.

Karlson’s upper body and neck were marked with crimson where the octopus had been. She explained that the octopus sometimes “slaps” at the fish who come to scavenge the shells.
